Simple Statements, Small Groups, and Transformation

Building relationships and enhancing conversations can be accomplished in the intimacy of a small group. It is in our small groups (of 3-4 people) that space for something new can emerge. Peter Block says that “the small group is the unit of transformation.” (2009)

Lynne and I like to use 3 specific yet simple statements when we host gatherings to guide how participants engage with each other. These simple statements suggest behavior that often leads to more than we imagined possible.

  1. Connect with those you know least. By extending your hand you are extending hospitality to another.
  2. Do not try to be helpful, but be curious.  In other words don’t have all the answer(s), but listen and ask questions that provide space for more meaningful conversations.
  3. Don’t wait to be chosen.  Ask to be included.

Take the opportunity to join us this fall at Artworks when we will be providing small group opportunities for meaningful conversations.
